About Wild Aperture Images

Welcome to Wild Aperture!

My name is Richard Pittam.

I am passionate about taking photographs of wild creatures, mainly birds.  But getting results, now that's the tricky bit - lots of hours, lots of patience, some skill and of course some luck!

Most of my photography I try and do in the UK, although I love the USA - the sheer variety and availability of birds is astonishing! and of course the weather is much better than here!

Just lately I have put a lot of effort into getting images of birds "in action", which can mean fighting, flying, landing, calling, singing, mating - anything other than just standing there posing.  Here are some of the results for you to browse and critique as you see fit.

These images are all of WILD birds and not aviary-kept birds.

If anything on the site takes your fancy, please contact me for more information.

See below for details of my cameras and lenses.

A trip to Bempton Cliffs (RSPB) for the sea birds should not be missed - the views of Fulmars are fantastic!

I live in Derbyshire and despite being a long way from the sea, it's surprising what birds we get here and thanks to the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust we have lots of reserves.  For more information on Derbyshire's birds, visit the Derbyshire Ornithological Society website

Kingfishers

Have you ever tried to photograph Kingfishers? Well if the answer to that question was yes, then you'll know how difficult it is to get great shots.

So far I have had little luck getting "action" shots of them, although along the way I have collected some decent "poses". I will keep at it and one day I will bag a top flight shot!

This shot of a Creat Crested Grebe was from DWT Willington and was a grab it or lose it chance!

I didn't think they flew a great deal - I know that sounds really lame, but I honestly had not seen many in flight.

However, once you get your eye in and pick the right time of day (very early morning) the Great Crested Grebe is a fantastic bird to watch!

Cameras, Lenses and other stuff!

Over the years I have gradually expanded my gear and made a bad back worse by lugging it all round everywhere!

My main gear is:

Canon 1D Mk3 (new and just fantastic!)

Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS lens (pin sharp!)

Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS lens (fast!)

Manfrotto Magfibre tripod with Manfrotto MN393 Long Lens Monopod Bracket (I use this mounted straight onto a Manfrotto tripod centre stub - it's great!)

Other gear

Canon 40D (fantastic value!)

Canon 30D (still a good camera)

Canon 400mm f5.6 L lens (sharp as a tack!)

Canon 1.4 and 2x Teleconverters

The world wouldn't be the same without Puffins!
