Richard - Great site, both design and content. Quite like the stylised images. What software did you use for this ?

Thanks for that, they have really suffered over the last couple of winters, but I have seen one or two out and about this year. I find rivers are best for them, although some lakes are honeypots, such as Brandon Marsh, near the NEC - never been, but seen some great shots from there. You can always trawl the image sites, such as birdguides or surfbirds, but the locations are very often not given, not least because of the Kingfisher's schedule 1 breeding status. Good luck.

Hi Richard, the photos from Sanibel Island are absolutely stunning. I spend two weeks there a few years ago and the Ospreys were amazing then. Your photos and the places you visited brought back very happy memories for my wife and I. We stayed at Bowmans beach which is ideal for the Ding Darling reserve and the beach. I must go again! PS I have taken your good advice and booked a day with Craig Jones in April (Harriers and Barn Owls - I can't wait)for some BIF. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your comments Chris. I have had that problem with the squirrels in woodland at Formby, Lancs. If there's no-one else about, I guess you use a bit of fill-in flash - I don't think the squirrel would bother. Alternatively you have to be there when some early morning/late evening light shines across and below the tree canopy. Regards Richard

Hiya Howard, How are you doing? Thanks for dropping by the site. Those Kingfishers were mainly from my dome hide next to the River Dove in Derbyshire - hours of waiting over most of 2007! How's that 300mm and 1D Mk3 coming along? Those prints you brought in were superb. Not sure if we'll make Caerlaverock this year, but it would be good to see you if we did. All the best. Richard

Some fabulous photo's; you obviously enjoy travelling. I find birds in Britain just too far away. Your sleepy barn owl how far away were you for that? It's great.

Hi Paul, Thanks for dropping by. The Barn Owl one was taken by my wife from the car window. It was on the wall of a barn facing the road mid-afternoon. I think it was about 15-20 metres away - pure chance we spotted it. You're right about most birding in the UK - too far away generally for pics. I used to do a lot of digiscoping, which brings them in closer, but find that it's difficult to get anything on the move! I can get reasonably close with 600mm (780mm if you allow for the 1D 1.3x crop factor), although sometimes it's just luck. Regards Richard

Hi Lee, Thanks for dropping by. Bird photography, especially flight photography, relies on a relatively quick camera to capture the moment at the drop of a hat! The 40D is a great camera for the price. It has a good sensor with low noise, 6.5 frames a second exposure speed, which is essential to get that moment captured in the camera and it is also very quick at focussing the subject. The problem with non-SLR cameras is that they are usually slow to focus (they have a shutter lag), which means that the bird has flown before you can photo it! The 40d also has an AI servo mode, which means the camera is constantly focusing on the subject and once locked on will try and keep it in focus. Lens are expensive, but there are some really good Sigma lens (50-500mm) which are quite quick and have good Ultrasonic focusing motors to keep up with the camera. Lots of the images on my site are taken with a 40D - i still own one along with my 1D Mk3. Good luck with your search for a camera. Regards Richard

Wooooow I really like your photos I'd like to take up bird photography am thinking about what camera to by. I bought a sony h9 but its too slow and very noisy… I'm a bit lost the canon d40 seems the best and quickest for the price range but are the photos really as good and clear as yours.

Hi Philip, Thanks for dropping by. It's a real treat when someone says they like your stuff. Birds are really tricky subjects, but the fun is in the challenge. You're right of course, the trick is to get out there. Let me know how you get on. By the way have a look at my Canon page (home page LHS) - there are some links to some great DSLR resources Kind regards Richard

Hi Richard Whoops - it wasn't intentional - my old site was just too damn boring - yours was a breath of fresh air! I crawled away and re-did mine, but I did like the Comic Sans font. I still like to use JAlbum as my main album producer, but am trying to produce an A-Z - that's a tricky one. wrt gear - I'm still getting to grips with this 1D Mk3 - still experimenting with the AF - how are you finding it?
